HEALTH: National Geographic

It's old news now, but it's still fine material.

The cover story in the November issue of National Geographic was about longevity. It featured Sardinians, Okinawans and SDAs in Loma Linda. I appreciated the quality reporting.

You can read it here.

What is your reaction?

For a long life, pack a lot of love.

My reaction was, "Wow! Vegetarianism and sunshine somehow outweigh smog and the California lifestyle? Weird. It must be the hospital." (I think Bryant [who lives there] deserves credit for helping me refine that conclusion.)

I had heard of Okinawa and Sardinia as pools of centenarians, and that Adventists were studied because of their vegetarian diets, but I was surprised to see Loma Linda included in the National Geographic article.

Yeah, my first reaction was, "It's because of the hospital." But I was also thinking about confounding variables such as that most of those people were either here before there was smog and stress, or didn't spend their whole lives in Loma Linda.

i also must admit that i was rather surprised to see loma linda featured. also, the article failed to mention the many adventists who are NOT vegetarian (some of that depends on what area of the country you grew up in - we north dakotans eat our meat) but it was a very interesting read. Have you heard about Doug Bachelor being interviewed for an upcoming article about prophecy? I believe it's for National Geographic as well.
