Congratulations, Gore! (updated 11.11.07)

You all know that Al Gore co-won the Nobel Peace Prize (along with the UN IPPC) for his efforts to educate the public about global warming. I just had to mention it anyway. And my sources tell me he won't be running for president.

You may have also heard that a British judge has ruled that Gore's An Inconvenient Truth is politically biased, alarmist and not scientifically accurate (9 or 11 errors depending on the news source). The nine disagreements are minor to me, though I don't agree with all of Burton's conclusions. But what is most interesting to me is that Justice Burton agreed with Gore's main points:

[Justice Burton] identified “four main scientific hypotheses, each of which is very well supported by research published in respected, peer-reviewed journals and accords with the latest conclusions of the IPCC.”

In particular, he agreed with the main thrust of Gore’s arguments: “That climate change is mainly attributable to man-made emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide (‘greenhouse gases’).”

The other three main points accepted by the judge were that global temperatures are rising and are likely to continue to rise, that climate change will cause serious damage if left unchecked, and that it is entirely possible for governments and individuals to reduce its impacts.

And from ABC News (An Inconvenient Verdict for Al Gore, Marcus Baram, 12 Oct . '07):

High Court Judge Michael Burton said that the film is "substantially founded upon scientific research and fact" but that the errors were made in "the context of alarmism and exaggeration."

Burton found that screening the film in British secondary schools violated laws barring the promotion of partisan political views in the classroom. But he allowed the film to be shown on the condition that it is accompanied by guidance notes to balance Gore's "one-sided" views, saying that the film's "apocalyptic vision" was not an impartial analysis of climate change.
