We have been searching for our next adventure for some months now. This break in career activities has given me plenty of time to read and blog. I am thankful for this opportunity, yet we are also eager to find our next mission. So far our tactic has been to apply to jobs and schools that we're interested in, while praying for God to open and close doors as He knows best. All doors have been closed to date, according to our vision.
In preparing for a group Bible study, we re-read the compilation of God's Will quotes collected by Dan Augsberger (scroll down to the bottom of that link). Again and again, giants of the faith have taught that to know God's will, we must be willing to give up our own.
Last night we took the time to write down all of the things we desire of our next adventure. Not just the job aspect, but all of the important elements. Then we turned our lists into questions from God.
For example, I wrote "move into our own place" on my list of desires. This became the question, "Jeff, will you live with friends or family if I ask you to?" Am I willing to give up my wants if God has other plans for the short- or long-term? We read through our lists together and slowly agreed to each. It was a really hard exercise in communication and in faith.
