Twitter is a communication service where you can send out 140 character messages to people who follow you. Naturally, you also receive short messages from the people you follow--family, friends, celebrities, professionals in your field, etc.

facebook is only starting to take off here, so i think this `twitter` thing, whatever it may be, might be a few years away
