Of all the revolutionary films we’ve watched over the past few months (The Motorcycle Diaries, The Edukators, V for Vendetta and Joyeux Noel), Sophie Scholl—The Last Days was my favorite. Julia Jentsch gave a fine performance in both this and The Edukators (Daniel Bruhl seems to keep showing up as well).I seem to like movies that are discourse driven, factual, and revolutionary.
Comparing her revolution of words and right action with V’s vengeful and explosive revolution, I come down on the side of Sophie (even though I was sympathetic to V). I want a revolution of love, of fairness, of justice, even of forgiveness. The means are just as crucial as the ends.
