Taken to the Cleaners

Some fine folk I know just bought a new washing machine because their old one stopped agitating. We searched online and over the phone lines to find someone in the state of Michigan who rebuilds and resells old appliances. We found no one.

Energy-wise, the Amana they bought appears to rank as a mid-level machine. It scores a 428 kWh/year on a scale from 113 to 680.

However, if you flip the EnergyGuide over to the Canadian side, you get a different picture. Canada’s standards range from 95 to 492. Suddenly the score of 428 is mighty high, right up there in the black range with the label “Uses most energy.”

So in this case we’ve apparently set the bar low by setting the standards high.
